Batanes Day 1

Batanes is a dream destination for me. Seeing pictures of the rolling hills, ocean views, stone houses and ivatans make me wonder when will i go to this place.

Today, September 26, 2014 is the realization of my dreams. I almost didn't sleep the night before my flight. It was 3:00 am when i left the house for our 5:30am flight. I am really excited to see the land of the winds.

It is around 7:00am when we arrived at Batanes airport. We were greeted with a big smile by two local's/ivatans wearing their vakul. Vakul is the head gear of old Ivatans as a shield for rain and heat of the sun. Of course, the mandatory photo op should not be missed.

After the meet and greet at the airport, we were transferred to our hotel/hometel for three nights. For our group, we are checked in at Amboy's Hometel. This is located at Brgy Chanarian Basco Batanes. 2.5 kilometers away from Basco town proper and is a stones throw away from the beach. The place is quiet, giving you a very relaxing mode after the whole day of touring around the island.

At 11:00 am we are fetched by our tour guide for our lunch. They brought us at the Pension Ivatan. One of the most famous restaurant for serving the ivatan platter. This ivatan platter consists of coconut crab, uvud balls, lumpiang gulay with kamote, pako salad, lunis, grilled fish, grilled squid, and supas (turmeric rice).

Coconut carb is the biggest living anthropod in the world. They only eat coconut (obviously). Their big claws are strong enough to crack coconuts. It is one of the main dishes that tourists are looking for. For a platter like the one below, it costs 1,700pesos good for 5-6 people.

Our stomachs are filled, our cameras are ready, here we come Batanes! Ready for Day 1- North Batan Island Tour.
